Connected in Hope
Creating real change in the lives of Ethiopian women through beautiful, handmade scarves.

Their story

Connected in Hope is, on the surface, a company that makes hand woven scarves and baskets. But deep down it’s a company that is changing the lives of women and children in Ethiopia by running a growing business that provides a steady income and positive working conditions. What began with an adoption and a first visit to Ethiopia in 2009, grew into a deep love and respect for the people there and a compelling desire to give back.

Connected in Hope’s gorgeous collection of scarves is created by members of the Former Women Fuel Wood Carriers Association, women who used to earn as little as $12 a month enduring backbreaking work. By weaving instead, they receive a fair trade payment, and Connected in Hope reinvests all the profits into education and healthcare programs that directly benefit these women and their families.

Nearly 40% of children in Ethiopia will never attend school, and because of their extremely low primary school enrollment rate, the country has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. Connected in Hope invests in programs to help turn that statistic around for their employees’ families. They also stock health clinics, build latrines and establish safe and accessible water sources while working with women to build their career opportunities.

“Our goal is to support positive, long-term change for our weavers while delivering great products to you,” says Pam Simpson, their U.S. staff director. “We want you to look good while doing good.”

Why we love them

We are so excited to be working with Connected in Hope, an amazing organization that creates real change in the lives of Ethiopian women, their families and communities through the creation and implementation of income, education and healthcare. We love their mission because it is so holistic and truly is making a whole community a better place to live, work and bring up children.

The love and care that goes into each handmade product really shows in their multiple collections of gorgeous scarves, from the classic infinity style to (our personal favorite), the striped Addis collection. We have even partnered with Connected in Hope to create scarves of our own design, so be on the lookout for more of those in the future!

Perhaps best of all, we love that each item has a tag signed by the woman who made it. You can even visit Connected in Hope’s website to thank the artisan directly - truly connecting yourself with the person whose life you’ve impacted in a positive way.
