Meet the Maker

OrigAudio
Eco-friendly, portable music solutions that give back to the community.

Their story

OrigAudio is bringing originality and spunk to the world of portable sound. The company was launched in 2009 by Jason Lucash, Mike Szymczak and John Micheal Ashford, who all traveled constantly in their early careers and wanted an easy way to listen to their music on the road. It was in their travels that the idea for OrigAudio came about.

The first product they launched was the Fold n’ Play speakers, which are made from recycled materials and require zero external power - making them Mother Nature approved. This completely innovative product landed them a spot on Time Magazine’s list of “50 Best Inventions of 2009” and appeared on ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank.” Inspired by a Chinese take-out box, the sound systems are foldable, incredibly compact, and recyclable. It’s the ‘origami of audio.’ (OrigAudio! Get it?)

Next they moved on to revolutionize headphones with Designears - the world’s first fully customizable headphones. Designears give you the opportunity to let your style shine through by uploading original artwork, customizing your colors, or printing words of your choice on your headphones. Your taste in music is uniquely yours, so why shouldn’t your headphones be, too?

While music is certainly the passion that drives them, the boys of OrigAudio are also committed to giving back to the community. They’ve partnered up with several nonprofits so that each purchase you make helps support some great causes, like music education and entrepreneurship in low-income schools.

Why we love them

In a sea of plain, plastic sound systems, we love the funk these guys are bringing to the category. Their compact products are well designed, eco-friendly and deliver incredible sound on-the-go. They’re even giving listeners the chance to design custom products, like headphones and speakers, and that’s pretty freakin cool.

Amazingly, the signature Fold n’ Play speakers don’t require any batteries or external power. You just plug them into any device with a headphone jack—cell phone, laptop, mp3 player, CD player—to enjoy some tunes at the beach, in a cab, at the office, in your kitchen, or pretty much anywhere you are. They come in lots of different designs to suit your taste, from cityscape to flowers to canvas. So go ahead and show your true colors. We love the idea of buying the multipack of 6 designs to give to friends as holiday gifts (or to hoard for yourself; we’re not here to judge).

Over here at Given Goods, we’ve even taken the liberty of designing an original set of Designears for you to enjoy! Check out the “Play Good, Be Nice” headphones and let us know what you think. Party on, Wayne.
