Kara Weaves
Reviving the handloom traditions of India through gorgeous fair trade fabrics.

Their story

Kara Weaves of Kerala is a handloom revival project that puts a contemporary spin on the age-old weaving traditions of India. Co-founders Chitra Gopalakrishnan and Indu Menon work with independent weavers and rural tailors to create premium quality, 100% cotton household items like robes, towels and napkins. Through the infusion of design thinking, technology and online marketing strategies, these two remarkable women are bringing ancient Indian weaving traditions into the 21st century.

Kara Weaves handloomed table linens and bath items use a finely woven cotton towel material called thorthu, traditionally used as an ayurvedic body-wipe fabric. The resulting products are incredibly soft, absorbent, quick drying and woven in a rainbow of vibrant colors - so you can contribute to a cause in style.

A certified member of the Fair Trade Forum of India, Kara Weaves linens are hand-stitched by certified cooperatives and independent local tailors in Kerala. They take care to ensure that no child labor is involved in any of their fabrication, and all custom block-printing is done by Gopalakrishnan herself.

As Gopalakrishnan says, “Nothing beats knowing that a product is well designed, ethically produced, and comfortable to use. That is our mantra for everything we make!”

Why we love them

There’s something foreign and exotic about Kara Weaves’ handwoven cotton robes. But the second you put one on, you feel right at home. That’s probably because the quality of the fabric is insanely soft and cozy, and the designs are vibrant and fun. If you’re having a lazy Sunday at home or an extended shower hour, this is the absolute perfect garment to do it in.

We also love their “tiny towel” sets with multi-colored stripes to use as cloth napkins. They add a touch of class to the kitchen, absorb wetness and dry quickly. The large towels are perfect for laying on the beach and can even be draped and worn as a sarong. When you’re packing a tiny suitcase for your beach vacation, versatility is key - which is why our favorite thing about these towels is how compact and easy they are to pack.

Kara Weaves is based in the heart of the community where all the hand weaving, tailoring, and printing is done: Kerala, India. So every purchase you make from this Fair Trade cooperative not only keeps the Indian handloom tradition alive, it also supports sustainable income and humane business practices for workers and families. Opportunity is the word!
